Which exams have you helped develop?
CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Storage+, CompTIA Security+, and the new CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) exam.
How did you get into IT?
IT was my MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) in the Marines. Following boot camp, I was sent to a 36 week technical school and I have been working in IT ever since. Semper Fi!
What do you do for your day job?
I work in the network infrastructure office, where I help monitor, document and maintain all network devices on an Air Force base on both the classified and unclassified network. I assist in managing and configuring over 300 switches and other network equipment, along with providing daily software and hardware maintenance as needed. I also work with the Information Assurance office to help monitor, document and configure all network encryption and security devices on base to provide secure communications.
Why did you become a subject matter expert?
I saw it as an opportunity to give back to the IT industry. I have had several conversations in the past about how certain exams from other vendors are outdated and irrelevant. With that in mind, I wanted to provide my input as it relates to my skill sets and experiences. I also enjoy offering valuable content that is current and I am grateful each time I am provided the opportunity to do so. I get a great feeling of accomplishment being part of such an incredible process.
You’ve helped develop the newest version of the CompTIA Security+ exam. How are the objectives for this exam different from the previous version?
I believe that the latest exam objectives reflect the way the IT industry is heading in regards to security. Security is an important factor in all IT fields and I feel that we were able to convey that through the objectives. Many industries rely on the CompTIA Security+ exam for hiring and promoting employees or even require it, such as the DoD (Department of Defense).
It is important to be certain that current IT security issues are addressed in the objectives. Anyone entering any IT field must be familiar with information security, whether it concerns data, network or application issues. I strongly feel that was accomplished in this latest version.
What are you doing when you're not working?
I spend as much time as I can with my beautiful wife and my two wonderful boys at home. Between going to LA Angels games, coaching my son's sports teams, and taking trips to Disneyland, I also love to travel. I take advantage of any opportunity for a family vacation. I also enjoy spending time with my extended family nearby and keeping in touch with my family in Mexico whenever I can.
